A Brief History of St. Veronica Roman Catholic Church
In 1945 Fr. John Albert, S.S.J., pastor of St. Francis Xavier visited the infant community of Cherry Hill. He purchased the fist property to create a mission church at a later date. The first pastor of the Mission Church, Fr. Francis Robbins, S.S.J., was appointed in 1946. He took up residence at the St. Monica’s rectory in South Baltimore. For more than five years he went back and forth daily visiting the sick, instructing converts, and making house to house visits to establish the new parish. Every Sunday he offered Mass at the Chery Hill Community Center. In 1951, the purchase of additional property was approved by Archbishop Keough and the site of the current parish was determined. There was a house on the property that Fr. Robbins converted into a rectory so he could live in the community. While extensive repairs were being done to the community center, Sunday Mass was offered in a store front and even the Theater in the shopping center. Realizing the importance of a Church in the community. Fr. Robbins petitioned to get a church built in Cherry Hill. Before his plans could be approved, a tragic fire claimed the life of the young pastor on January 1, 1954.
With the approval of the Josephites, Fr. Charles Coughlin, S.S.J. was appointed pastor and he continued the plans to build a church in Cherry Hill. Ground was broken for the construction of the church on June 25, 1954. The dedication of the current church building occurred on May 1, 1955. There were many dedicated Josephites who served in the role of pastor following Fr Coughlin and they are: Fr. Thomas Dahn, S.S.J. 9/4/60 - 9/8/63; Fr, Daniel Cassidy, S.S.J. 9/9/63 - 9/13/68; Fr. Paul Banet, S.S.J. 9/14/68 - 9/30/76; Fr. Jim McLinden, S.S.J. 10/1/76 - 9/27/85; Fr, William McKenna, S.S.J. 9/30/85 - 9/30/89; Fr. Tom Frank, S.S.J. 10/1/89 - 9/30/93; Fr.
